Meaningful community and lifelong friendships.

Our students grow in so many ways. They publish in the literary magazine. Become valued teammates. Enjoy the warmth of Shabbat. Develop critical time management and study skills. Leadership abilities grow through significant service projects — as do powerful relationships. Whether our students are Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, or "just Jewish," they thrive in a living/learning community that's serious about inquiry, passionate about connection, and committed to Jewish identity.

Role models and resources are always close at hand in the form of faculty members, houseparents (many of whom are also faculty), fellows (recent college graduates who assist with residential life), and madrichim (peer mentors).

Learning with fun and purpose—
for college and for life.

Academic rigor balanced with plentiful choices.

Sports medicine. Astrophysics. Improvisational Comedy. EcoJudaism. In our course catalog, you'll find a full roster of college prep and AP-level academic subjects, as well as an extraordinary range of electives.

Everything in our holistic environment is designed to make the most of personal instruction and technology: from custom-designed learning tables that encourage discussion, to classroom SMART Boards that seamlessly integrate with students' Lenovo ThinkPad tablet computers.

Your teenager's immersive, experiential learning extends beyond the classroom, too. When Academy students learn about the history of the Jewish people their junior year, they're in Israel, taking part in a ten-week study-abroad program with their Academy classmates.

Wide-open possibilities

Looking ahead: college and beyond.

We offer an experience that's unique among American high schools—and that means our graduates stand out in the admissions offices of the nation's most impressive colleges.

Frequently Asked Questions

1

How is the American Hebrew Academy different from all other high schools? We are a category of one: a Jewish boarding school that welcomes students from all Jewish backgrounds—Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and "just Jewish." By living and learning together, and experiencing Jewish life in all its diversity, students come to more fully understand and appreciate what being Jewish means to them.

2

Where do your students come from? The currently enrolled student body represents 23 U.S. states, as well as Aruba, Chile, Costa Rica, Israel, Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Moldova, and Thailand. Approximately 80 percent of students board on campus and 20 percent commute from the surrounding area.

3

Is there an entrance exam? We require the results of a standardized test taken during the school year prior to entrance. The SSAT, ERB, PSAT, SAT, or, for non-native English speakers, the TOEFL or SLEP tests are acceptable. An interview, application, recommendations, and school records are also required.

4

Are scholarships/financial aid available? The Academy is committed to providing access to qualified students by providing substantial financial aid. However, because the number of requests for aid typically exceeds our capacity, we cannot ensure that every family seeking financial assistance will receive an award. These awards are made on a first-come, first–served basis, so we encourage all applicants to apply as soon as possible—preferably before May 1—for the highest probability of receiving an award. Families requesting financial assistance must be able to pay a minimum of at least $12,000 for a boarding student or $9,000 for a day student from sources other than the Academy. All awards are made independent of and have no impact on academic admission to the Academy. To apply for financial assistance click here. 5

What do college admissions officers think about American Hebrew Academy's graduates? Among the nation's 28,000 high schools, there is no place like the American Hebrew Academy—and the Academy's students stand out in a sea of conventional applicants. Academy graduates have been admitted to prestigious liberal arts colleges and research powerhouses like Columbia, Cornell, Northwestern, Princeton, UC Berkeley, University of Chicago, and Wellesley.
